A Denver native, Verne attended George Washington High School and Arizona State University where he began his officiating career in 1980. Verne Harris' background includes having officiated several high school state tournaments, plus he has worked NCAA Men's Division II basketball since 1986 and Division I since 1989. He is currently an official in the Western Athletic, Big Sky, Mountain West, Big XII, PAC-10, Rocky Mountain Athletic and North Central conferences. It doesn't stop there. His post-season experience includes the 1994, 1997, and 1998 National Invitation Tournaments, 1994 and 1995 Division II Tournaments, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament each year from 1994 through 1999, and the Mountain West Conference Tournament in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
